Art and Sacred Architecture in Ravenna
Churches, Early Christian Site | September 6, 2010The Basilica Di San Vitale, which is located in Ravenna, dates all the way back to the sixth century. This is the place that has some of the finest mosaics in the world.
The plan to have this constructed was the idea of Ecclesius who was a bishop of Ravenna. . After a little the when this bishop went to Bynazntium and met with the pope John in the year five hundred and twenty five, that was when therodoric was succeeded by amalasuntha his daughter, as the ruler of the great Goths of Ravenna.
These rules were essentially Aryan, although the daughter was quite tolerant of the Catholic people, compared to her father.
The construction of this place began in the year five hundred and twenty six. The site that was closed was the site where saint vitalis was martyred. Juliuanus Argentarius was probably solely responsible for funding this entire construction. This man is supposed to be a private banker here in Ravenna. It is all said that he may have been a royal enjoy to Justinian. And his purpose was believed to be to come here and set up the entire place for the conquest by the Byzantianian Empire.
In the year five hundred and forty, Ravenna was taken from the Byzantines in the year five hundred and forty. The Byzantines later took over the remainder of the construction of this church and this original gothic construction was finished under the rule of the Byzantine Empire; in the year five hundred and forty eight.
The first archbishop of Ravenna called Maximian, conserated this place. And now most of what can be see including the mosaics, date early from this period.
The inside part of this church is quite fascinating. The coupla is decorated with eighteen century murals. The entire remainder of the insides is done with Byzantine architecture. This provides an authentic atmosphere. The choir ceilings and the glitter which is quite apse is done magnificently with green and gold.
The arch marks the entrance to the presbytery. This place is decorated with mosaics and different kinds of medallions of Jesus Christ with his beard. Also there are medallions of the twelve apostles and of other two saints who could possible be saint Gervasius and saint Protasius. These two were the songs of Saint Vitalus.
All the apostles have detailed difference sin their hairstyle and the clothes and appearance. Saint Andrew has hair that reminded me a little of Einstein. . Around the medallions are pairs of dolphins with their tails crossed and a detail sculpted globe in the between.
